A spectacular Brutalist sculpture depicting an angelfish swimming in an underwater setting composed of metallic seaweed, a textured seabed, and a starfish. This American work from the 1970s develops an expressive organic aesthetic, blending decorative sculpture, fine craftsmanship, and Brutalist influences.
The composition features extensive visible decorative welding, used as a graphic element that structures the fish's anatomy. The overall effect is a strong sculptural presence typical of American studio metal art productions of the 1960s and 70s.
The treatment of the exposed welds, the hammered textures, and the organic construction are reminiscent of some of Mike Bucha's work or certain Brutalist sculptural pieces in the style of Curtis Jere.
The surface alternates between varnished metal with iridescent brown-black reflections and areas intentionally left raw or oxidized on the base to reinforce the marine and mineral effect of the composition.
