Antique African N’tomo Mask
Traditional African tribal mask, specifically styled after the Ntomo (or N'tomo) masks created by the Bamana (Bambara) and Marka people of Mali.
The Horns: The prominent vertical spikes or horns at the top are a signature feature of Ntomo initiation masks. The number of horns often carries symbolic meaning relating to gender, human traits, or spiritual levels.
Metal and Cowrie Adornments: The small shells attached to the sides are cowrie shells, which historically symbolized wealth, fertility, and status across West Africa. The white and dark geometric divisions on the face often feature thin sheet-metal overlays or pigmentations characteristic of Marka artistry.
Cultural Use: Traditionally, these masks were worn by young boys during their transition into the Ntomo secret society, representing a stage of purification, discipline, and preparation for adulthood.
