Transport your space to the historic hills of Minas Gerais with this captivating 1979 original oil painting by Brazilian artist J. Refanne. Executed with a rich, heavy impasto technique, the artwork masterfully depicts a sun-drenched colonial street winding upward toward a majestic baroque church in the historic town of Tiradentes. The thick, textured brushwork gives the architectural landscape an incredible sense of movement and organic depth, beautifully contrasting the warm terracotta rooftops against a soft, cloud-filled sky.
Full of authentic character, the back of the canvas retains its original handwritten provenance, including the title, artist's signature, and an apartment address in the historic Catete neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro dated 1979.
The painting is housed in its original mid-century rustic wood frame with a crisp white inner liner that perfectly complements the artwork’s neutral and earth-toned palette. Boasting a striking vertical presence, this piece is an exceptional find for collectors of Latin American art or designers looking to introduce global history, rich texture, and soulful vintage charm to a gallery wall, entry, or living space. Excellent vintage condition with pre-installed hanging wire.
Housed in its original vintage 16x28-inch wood frame with a classic white inner liner,

The heavy impasto paint application is well-preserved, with no active flaking, peeling, or paint loss. Craquelure: There is a faint, natural network of age-craquelure appearing in some of the thicker, lighter paint passages (such as the white areas of the church facade and the sky). This is a completely normal, stable characteristic of 1970s oil layers and adds to its authentic vintage patina. Canvas Tension: The canvas remains tightly stretched over its original wood stretcher bars with no sagging or warping. 2. Reverse & Provenance Documentation Inscriptions: The reverse raw canvas shows standard, light vintage darkening/oxidization over time. The handwritten ink text identifying the title (Tiradentes), the artist signature (J. Refanne), and the historic Rio de Janeiro street address (Catete 510 ap 40 / Rio) is perfectly legible and undisturbed. 3. Frame & Liner Wood Frame: The original rustic mid-century dark wood frame is structurally solid and intact. It displays light surface scuffing and minor edge wear consistent with a 45+ year lifespan, giving it an excellent authentic character. Inner Linen Liner: The white fabric/linen border inlay shows a mild, generalized vintage discoloration and subtle spotting from age. There are no structural tears or unravelling to the fabric liner. Hardware: The back retains its original mounting staples and heavy-duty hanging wire. The hardware is secure and ready to be displayed immediately upon arrival. less
