George von Hoesslin came from an old, "patrician" bourgeois family from Augsburg. Initially, he trained as a merchant and spent several years in America. But already in 1871 he began his artistic education in Munich; first at the School of Artistic Crafts (Kunstgewerbeschule), later at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1875 he visited Italy for the first time, where he later went many times for longer study stays over the years. In 1880 he was in Boston for some time, then in Rome for several years. In 1884 he settled permanently in Munich. He painted historical, mythological and allegorical paintings, compositions with a mystical and religious mood (e.g. Adagio consolante), but also numerous landscapes from Italy, still lifes and portraits. from 1876 he showed his works at exhibitions at the Glaspalast in Munich. Many of his paintings found their way into private collections, including English and American ones.
