The concept: mechanical geometry under the microscope
blades is a piece of conceptual lighting design that redefines industrial aesthetics through an almost scientific lens. Italian designer dario nasuti drew inspiration from a close-up examination of everyday mechanical technology: the lamp's final structure evokes the sharp, complex geometry of electric razor blades seen under a microscope, or the modular profiles of industrial shredders. With blades, the theoretical aggressiveness of the blade is deconstructed and transformed into a hypnotic, floating sculptural presence capable of engaging deeply with the surrounding space.
the production process: fine metalwork and kinetic chains
the entire piece is self-produced in parma, italy, blending industrial manufacturing precision with careful manual assembly:
the steel modules: each individual circular element is laser-cut, bent, and welded to achieve a multifaceted, solid, and geometric three-dimensionality.
the micro-peened finish: a rigorous treatment that bombards the steel with microspheres, eliminating any glossy reflection. This process gives the metal a matte, deaf, and beautifully technical texture, with an almost surgical look.
movement and asymmetry: the discs are linked one by one via steel rings, forming articulated chains of varying lengths suspended around a 30 cm diameter ceiling rose. This calibrated asymmetry breaks the stiffness of the material, giving the chains an organic, kinetic movement.
the lighting direction on the ceiling
the lamp features a total height of 65 cm and houses an oversized central "globe" led bulb (ø 12.5 cm, 10w). Its central placement allows the light not only to cast downwards but to bounce against the angled facets of the surrounding metal discs. This creates an exceptional reflected light effect, transforming the ceiling into a genuine geometric canvas—an abstract scenography of shadows and glints cut by the metal, enriching the atmosphere of any contemporary, minimalist, or brutalist interior.
