An exceptional Japanese carrying cabinet for a merchant or craftsman, with seven drawers, original metal details and a deep, timeworn patina.
Dimensions: height 69 cm, width 31 cm, depth 46 cm. Weight: 16 kg.
This antique Japanese gyōshō-bako dates from the early Meiji period. This type of portable merchant’s cabinet was used to carry tools, documents or small goods, and could be worn on the back. At the rear, metal fittings and remains are still visible where the carrying straps were once attached. Especially interesting is the raised back panel with a long rounded cut-out, designed so the cabinet did not rest fully against the body and allowed some air circulation while being carried.
The cabinet has seven drawers of different heights, arranged in a sober and powerful composition. Most drawers are fitted with metal ring pulls; two handles were later replaced with simple wooden pulls. The exterior has a dark reddish-brown finish, with wear, scratches and exposed areas where the warm wood subtly appears. This gives the piece a strong wabi-sabi character.
Inside, most drawers are divided into compartments, probably for small tools, writing materials, trade goods or delicate objects. The natural wooden interior shows handwritten markings and traces of use, keeping the original function beautifully visible. The metal fittings, hinges, rings and old adaptations enhance its functional, almost architectural presence.
Today, this is a rare and highly characterful interior piece. Ideal as a small drawer cabinet for jewellery, drawing materials, textiles, documents, ceramic accessories or collectible objects. Used as a sculptural display piece, combined with plants, ceramics or curated objects, it immediately brings depth, history and Japanese sobriety into a contemporary interior.
The cabinet is sturdy and functional, with clear signs of use, patina and old adaptations consistent with age and intensive use.
