A finely engraved and highly decorative map of the Kingdom of Valencia in eastern Spain, published by Willem and Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam around 1642. This elegant regional map, titled Valentia Regnum, originates from Blaeu’s celebrated atlas Toonneel des Aerdrycx, one of the great masterpieces of Dutch Golden Age cartography. The map depicts the Mediterranean coastal region of Valencia in remarkable detail, extending inland toward Castile and Aragon. Rivers, towns, mountain ranges, and regional boundaries are carefully engraved, creating a rich and highly readable portrait of this historically important Spanish kingdom. The coastline is crisply delineated and animated with sailing vessels, reinforcing the maritime identity of the region during the age of exploration and trade. A particularly attractive feature is the large Baroque cartouche positioned prominently near the lower center of the composition. Richly colored and elegantly ornamented, it provides strong decorative balance and immediately draws the eye. Multiple ships and a finely engraved compass rose further enhance the maritime atmosphere, while the original hand-coloring delicately emphasizes provincial borders, rivers, and topographic features. Maps of Valencia by Blaeu are especially sought after due to their combination of decorative sophistication and Mediterranean appeal. The elegant balance of cartographic detail, coastal geography, and ornamental engraving gives this map exceptional wall presence, making it equally suitable for collectors and refined interiors. An outstanding collector’s piece and a highly decorative work, ideal for a study, library, Mediterranean-style interior, or sophisticated coastal setting. Particularly effective when presented in a museum-style frame with warm lighting.
Condition: Good condition for its age. Original central fold as issued. Light overall toning consistent with age. Minor wear and faint staining, mainly in the margins. Edges slightly irregular. Colors remain fresh and attractive. Please study image carefully. Framing: This piece presents beautifully in a dark walnut or ebonized wood frame with a wide warm ivory mat. A museum-style presentation enhances the decorative cartouche and maritime detail. Particularly effective in a darker study or elegant Mediterranean interior setting.
