An original set of four Mid-Century dining chairs, model 515, produced in 1959 by TON Furniture in one of the company’s former Thonet factories in what was then Czechoslovakia. The design is widely attributed to the Austrian architect and designer Oswald Haerdtl.
Model 515 demonstrates Haerdtl’s mastery of proportion and detail. The silhouette is refined and almost architectural in its clarity, yet softened by the elegant curvature of bent beech wood, a technique inherited from the great Thonet tradition. The gently tapered legs, subtle transitions between elements, and visually lightweight construction give the chairs an understated sophistication that still feels remarkably contemporary today.
Particularly striking is the treatment of the backrest, where the fixings are carefully concealed, allowing the form to remain visually pure and uninterrupted. This attention to detail reflects Haerdtl’s broader design philosophy: modernism not as cold functionalism, but as a careful balance between utility, craftsmanship, and elegance.
The dark stained wood, with its beautifully developed natural patina, contrasts particularly well with the newly upholstered yellow seat cushions, adding warmth and a subtle sense of optimism to the otherwise restrained composition. The result is a set of chairs that feels both timeless and deeply rooted in the optimistic post-war modernism of Central Europe.
All four chairs remain in good vintage condition, showing only age-appropriate wear and patina acquired through decades of use. These traces of time contribute to the authenticity and individuality of the set. The original seat interiors and upholstery had deteriorated beyond restoration and were therefore carefully replaced with new foam and fabric chosen to respect the character and spirit of the original design.
More than sixty years after their production, these chairs remain as relevant and visually compelling as ever. It’s a testament not only to the enduring quality of TON’s craftsmanship, but also to Haerdtl’s extraordinary sensitivity to form, proportion, and everyday living. This piece has an attribution mark,
