Carnival glass, also known as iridescent glass, was produced from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century, with its peak popularity between 1907 and 1925. It was made by pressing molten glass into molds and then applying a metallic salt solution to the surface while the glass was still hot, creating a shimmering, iridescent effect. This technique allowed for intricate patterns and vibrant colors, making it an affordable alternative to more expensive cut glass.
This particular bowl features a common motif of butterflies and grapevines, often found on pieces made by manufacturers like Fenton, Northwood, and Indiana Glass. The marigold (orange) color is one of the most prevalent and sought-after hues. Such bowls were popular as decorative items and were often given away as prizes at carnivals, hence the name.
