Originally painted in 1910, George Bellows' Polo Crowd is widely considered one of the greatest American sporting masterpieces. It features a dark, tumultuous sky over a chaotic, asymmetrical polo match. In this piece he was able to capture the aggressive, almost violent scrum of the players and horses in the foreground, turning what was typically an elite, aristocratic sport into a tense, kinetic, and physical confrontation.

In December 1999, the painting was sold at Sotheby's in New York to billionaire tech mogul Bill Gates for a staggering $27.5 million.
