Signed and clearly dated 1964 by the artist Louise Goodwin, this diptych is an exemplary showcase of the mid-century Southern California "Desert School" aesthetic.

Designed to be hung together, the canvases feature a beautifully balanced, mirrored composition. The left painting features prominent, heavily textured desert flora (Yucca / Pampas grass) and jagged mountain peaks catching the light. The right painting masterfully balances the set with a stylized desert tree cluster expanding into a wide mountain valley.
