A patinated copper alloy abstract sculpture by William Black (British, b.1922), dating to the late 1960s and signed to the base.
Constructed from shaped copper sheet mounted on a wire armature, the work demonstrates a refined sense of balance and geometry. Suspended curved elements create rhythm and movement across the vertical structure, while the elongated base anchors the composition with architectural clarity.
The rich green verdigris patina and tonal surface variation form an integral part of the work’s aesthetic, developed naturally over time.
Black is understood to have lived and worked in Cornwall during the second half of the 20th century. His practice reflects mid-century British abstraction and the wider St Ives modernist context, with an emphasis on material presence, structure and spatial balance.
A sculptural and highly decorative example of British post-war modernism. This piece has an attribution mark,
