A typical piece from the Restoration/early Louis-Philippe period (1819-1838), with a persistent Empire style.

Convex body on a gadrooned foot, sculptural zoomorphic handles (lions holding bunches of grapes), domed lid with a gadrooned frieze and a chiseled pinecone finial.

The lid features an elegant engraved design of bunches of grapes and vine leaves.

The central motif depicts two swans drinking.

Hallmarks (detailed by part)

Hinged: Paris "Ceres" hallmark, Vieillard 1st standard hallmark (950/1000), maker's mark DG for Denis Garreau, registered in 1817 and located at 62 Rue du Temple in Paris (partially erased).

Lid: Paris "Ceres" hallmark, Vieillard 1st standard hallmark (950/1000), illegible maker's mark.

Sugar bowl body: Paris "Mask of Tragedy" hallmark, Vieillard 1st standard hallmark (950/1000), illegible maker's mark.

Condition

Very good for its age (over 180 years old) – intact structure, no major dents or deformation, engravings and reliefs are crisp. Visible wear to the gilding on the base and lid (handling marks: rubbing, partial tarnishing of the gilding), but no wear to the gilding on the body of the sugar bowl (gilding well preserved).
