Translucent greys … Read more This small untitled composition by French painter Henri Darnaud combines delicate watercolor washes with dynamic black ink strokes. Translucent greys and bold lines create a lyrical interplay of tone, suggesting forms while remaining purely abstract. Darnaud, Lyon-born and a pioneer of “abstraction pointilliste,” extended Seurat’s pointillism into the realm of full abstraction. Originally a landscape painter, he turned to pure abstraction in the postwar years, gaining recognition in salons such as Lyon’s Salon Regain of 1976. This work captures his refinement and his push toward an expressive language of light and rhythm.
