Japanese folk art statue in lacquered and polychrome wood with sulphide eyes.
Japanese folk art, Edo/Meiji period
This Japanese sculpture depicts a popular male figure with an expressive and deliberately caricatured face. Standing in a lively pose, the figure adopts an energetic attitude, with his left arm raised and his fist clenched. The treatment of the face—pronounced cheeks, a wide smile, and a lively gaze—reflects the Japanese taste for theatrical and narrative figures inspired by folklore or the performing arts. The sculpture is carved from wood and then covered with polychrome lacquer in reddish-brown tones, with some green and black highlights visible on the belt and clothing.
Note the signs of wear, rubbing, and losses to the polychrome paint.
