From childhood on, Mil was a dedicated and talented painter. He received a Bachelor of Science in Art and English from Millikin University, a Master's in Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Illinois, and a Master of Science in Educational Administration and Supervision from Southern Illinois University.
Mil exhibited his paintings across the United States and Mexico, winning numerous awards and prizes. He enjoyed teaching art to junior high and high school students in Granite City and Champaign.
He viewed his paintings as "joyous expressions," as visual psalms, hymns of praise, in color. He always said that God worked through him, and that he was but a vessel through which the Holy Spirit made a presence on earth.
His large-scale painting, "Epiphany Mystery: Glory," hangs at Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church in Champaign.
In Mil's words: "As a painter must have more than one color with which to paint a great picture, so we must have contrasting experiences, if we would produce a life that is a masterpiece. Lights and shadows, heights and depths, laughter and tears, struggles and triumphs - these are the experiences that offer us the contrasting colors out of which we produce life's noblest and best."
