Andres Molinares | "Bodegon Fruitas" | Mexican Modernist Still Life | Oil on Canvas | c. 1960s
A striking example of mid-20th century Mexican modernism, this oil on canvas still life by Andres Molinares presents a lavish arrangement of tropical fruit with the bold, confident hand of an artist deeply rooted in the Mexican muralist tradition. A towering pineapple anchors the composition from above, its geometric scales rendered with graphic precision, while bunches of bananas cascade beside a pedestal compote overflowing with apples and peaches in warm reds, yellows, and oranges. The palette is rich and saturated, set against a moody background that shifts between deep plum, burgundy, and smoky umber. The brushwork is painterly and assured, with visible texture across the canvas surface that gives the work an almost tactile presence.
Molinares brings a Post-Cezannian sensibility to a classically Mexican subject. The forms are simplified and monumental, the shadows deep and sculptural, and the whole composition radiates the same earthy vitality that defines the great Mexican modernist still life tradition.
The painting is signed in paint in the lower right and retains its original Galeria Mexicana de Arte label on the reverse, the gallery having been located at Paseo de la Reforma 105 in Mexico City. This provenance grounds the work firmly in the heart of mid-century Mexican art culture. Presented in a light natural wood gallery float frame.
