This surreal and whimsical painting is a signature work by the celebrated Haitian artist Audes Saül. The painting features a large, stylized portrait of a man filling the majority of the frame. He is depicted with a smooth, rounded face, large wide-set eyes, and a pleasant, almost neutral expression. Despite the formal attire, a sharp blue suit, white collared shirt, and a vibrant red tie, he is holding a large pink fish in his mouth and a carrot in his pocket. Lightly raised texture to the line work. Hand signed lower right and finished in original artist frame.


Artist Bio: Haitian artist Audes Saul was born in Bombardolis on May 25, 1949, to a father farmer and a mother market woman. Moving to Port-au-Prince late in his teenage years, he became a laborer, carpenter, and electrician. Saul, whose brother Charles is also a painter, began to paint in 1970. Four years later, he began incorporating anthropomorphic dogs into his paintings. He prides himself on not attending art school, visiting museums, or reading art books. His paintings were exhibited in France in 1975, as well as in Italy, Sweden, the United States, and Japan, and were especially prized.
