A serene and atmospheric black-and-white photograph of the Merced River in Yosemite Valley by acclaimed American photographer Robert Werling. Capturing the quiet stillness of the river with mirrored reflections of towering granite cliffs and winter trees, this image exemplifies Werling’s mastery of tonal range, composition, and classic silver gelatin printing techniques.
Born in San Francisco in 1946, Robert Werling discovered photography early in life and went on to earn both a BA and honorary MS from the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. He studied privately with legendary photographers Ansel Adams from 1966 to 1970 and Imogen Cunningham from 1969 to 1975, experiences that deeply shaped his technical precision and artistic philosophy. Through Adams, Werling developed relationships with many influential photographers of the era, including a close friendship and mentorship with Brett Weston. Renowned for his darkroom expertise, Werling also printed negatives for celebrated documentary photographer Marion Post Wolcott.
Werling’s distinguished career includes numerous celebrated portfolios, among them The Sierra Nevada (1980), Japan (1982), Alaska (1983), The California Coast (1994), and San Francisco (2008). In addition to creating his own fine art photographs, he lectured extensively and taught at the Brooks Institute, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and internationally in Germany. His work has been exhibited in more than sixty solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe and is held in the permanent collections of major institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Huntington Library and Museum, and the Sprengel Museum.
