this spectacular oil painting depicts a coastal village and is the work of the basque artist julián de tellaeche y aldasoro. It portrays a pleasant and picturesque scene of a coastal village's port. The focus is on capturing the beauty of the urban landscape, without any apparent message or social commentary, an aspect that links it to post-impressionism. The various figures of houses and boats are dissolved in small, quick dabs of color that bring the work to life. The vibrant color palette highlights the reflections of the water and light. The brushstrokes are loose and visible (typical of the impressionists), reinforcing the sense of movement and light.
julián de tellaeche y aldasoro (bergara, gipuzkoa, 1884 – lima, 1957)
julián de tellaeche y aldasoro was a painter whose career was profoundly influenced by his youth as a sailor and his subsequent training in paris. He left the seafaring profession to enter the world of painting under the tutelage of eduardo chicharro, who encouraged him to travel to paris, where he completed his training at the académie julian and the académie colarossi.
after his time in paris, he settled in lekeitio (bizkaia), dedicating himself entirely to painting. He first showcased his talent in 1910 at the vi exhibition of modern art in bilbao. He presented his works in important national and international exhibitions, such as the international exhibition of painting and sculpture in bilbao in 1919 and the international exhibition of barcelona in 1929.
with the outbreak of the spanish civil war, he was forced into exile in paris, where he participated in the 1937 international exposition. Years later, in 1952, he moved to lima, the city where he resided until his death, serving as curator of the peruvian national artistic heritage. His artistic legacy is also linked to his work in exile; after the civil war, he moved to peru, where he worked for unesco in the creation of schools for the restoration of colonial art.
