Late Qing / Early Republic Chinese wedding or dowry chest featuring a rich cinnabar-toned lacquered surface with bold hand-painted black calligraphy panels and engraved Greek-key border trim. The chest retains its original brass corner mounts and rare complete sliding brass lock mechanism with removable locking bar.
Traditionally used to store textiles, garments, and wedding gifts, pieces like this were often given as part of a bride’s dowry and decorated with auspicious inscriptions symbolizing harmony, fortune, and marital happiness. The dramatic oversized calligraphy and warm lacquer patina give the piece exceptional decorative presence.
Likely produced for the Chinese export market or overseas Chinese community during the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1915.
Beautiful as a chest, entryway storage piece, or accent in chinoiserie, eclectic, or traditional interiors.
Original antique condition with age-appropriate wear, surface scratches, oxidation to brass hardware, and patina consistent with age and use. Original sliding lock assembly included.
