A wonderfully atmospheric antique vanity stool or petite decorative footstool featuring an ornate metal scroll-form base topped with a heavily worn chinoiserie-style embroidered seat. Probably circa late 19th century. Timeworn and beautifully imperfect, this piece has the kind of romantic layered patina that decorators and antique lovers seek for collected European and grandmillennial interiors.
The embroidered textile top depicts florals and a delicate bird motif in faded pinks, greens, and soft blue tones against a dark background. The upholstery is in very tattered condition with extensive fraying, textile loss, exposed areas, and visible age throughout, giving the piece a striking faded beauty and authentic antique character.
The seat construction reveals its age as well, with the original stuffing now largely gone beneath the textile and visible upholstery nails securing the fabric to the wooden seat form underneath. The ornate metal base remains sturdy and stable with graceful scrolling details and age-developed patina.
Originally intended as a ladies’ vanity stool, dressing stool, or petite footstool, the piece is now best appreciated as a decorative object, accent piece, or restoration candidate rather than functional daily seating in its present condition.
An especially charming piece for layered English country, French-inspired, moody traditional, chinoiserie, or curated antique interiors.
