Virginia Cohn Parkum, c. Unknown
In Sumi Beverage, Virginia Cohn Parkum transforms an everyday ritual into an elegant meditation on warmth, companionship, and presence. With only a few deliberate brushstrokes, she outlines two vessels — one taller, handled mug and one rounded cup — their simple contours rendered in confident sumi ink lines. The forms are intentionally unembellished, allowing the negative space of the paper to define their volume and quiet solidity.
From each vessel rises a ribbon of steam, drawn as fluid, calligraphic lines that sway upward with organic rhythm. These rising strokes are the emotional heart of the composition. Their graceful curves suggest heat, breath, and life — a visual metaphor for comfort and the invisible exchange between body and atmosphere. The steam lines intertwine subtly in the center, hinting at conversation, shared silence, or the intimate presence of two people sitting together.
Parkum’s brushwork reveals both control and spontaneity. The ink lines vary in density and edge quality, shifting from velvety saturation to dry-brush softness, preserving the immediacy of the gesture. The slight irregularities in the contours give the vessels a handmade humanity, reinforcing the sense of domestic warmth rather than rigid design.
The composition’s asymmetrical balance contributes to its quiet vitality. The larger mug anchors the left side, while the smaller cup nestles beside it, creating a relational dialogue rather than a static still life. The surrounding white space functions as atmosphere, allowing the steam to rise into openness and emphasizing stillness and calm.
Sumi Beverage celebrates the poetry of the ordinary. By reducing the scene to gesture and breath-like line, Parkum elevates a simple moment — sharing a warm drink — into a reflection on comfort, connection, and the restorative power of small daily rituals.
