Virginia Cohn Parkum, c. Unknown
In Kitty Enso 1, Virginia Cohn Parkum playfully merges Zen calligraphic tradition with personal affection and humor. At first glance, the work presents a bold enso — a hand-formed circle painted in dense black ink, its brushwork layered and textured, revealing the rhythm of repeated passes around the form. The ring feels grounded and substantial, its dark mass encircling a luminous interior space.
Within that central opening, however, Parkum introduces a subtle and affectionate surprise: two small marks suggest closed, contented eyes, while the upper contour implies pointed ears. The negative space resolves into the serene face of a resting cat. This gentle revelation transforms the enso from a purely spiritual gesture into something intimate and domestic — a meditation shaped by companionship and warmth.
The brushwork itself balances control and spontaneity. Variances in ink density and the feathered edges of the stroke preserve the immediacy of the hand, while the slightly irregular interior shape reinforces the organic nature of the circle. Rather than striving for perfect geometry, Parkum embraces the living imperfection that defines both Zen aesthetics and the quiet unpredictability of animals.
The piece reflects Parkum’s well-known affection for cats, creatures long associated with independence, stillness, and contemplative presence. Here, the cat becomes an emblem of quiet awareness — alert yet restful, contained yet free — mirroring the meditative state the enso traditionally represents.
In Kitty Enso 1, Parkum gently dissolves the boundary between spiritual symbol and everyday love. The result is both contemplative and tender: enlightenment rendered not as abstraction alone, but as the peaceful presence of a small, familiar companion resting within the circle of being.
