In HITO, Virginia Cohn Parkum constructs a spare yet emotionally charged composition in which a few stark elements carry profound symbolic weight. Against a dark, matte ground, a vivid blue handprint emerges with tactile immediacy, accompanied by a vertical ochre field as an "I" and the hito figure below. The composition feels deliberate and ritualistic, as though each mark has been placed with ceremonial intent rather than purely aesthetic purpose.

The blue handprint dominates the image. Unlike a painted hand, the print retains the indexical quality of direct contact an imprint that testifies to touch, existence, and humanness. The saturated blue evokes calm, spirit, and transcendence, yet the density of the print also suggests pressure, urgency, and the act of leaving a mark before disappearance. The hand becomes both a declaration "I am here" and a relic of contact.

The title HITO introduces an important interpretive key. In Japanese, “hito” means “person” or “human being,” transforming the handprint into a universal signifier rather than an individual signature. Parkum thus shifts the reading from autobiographical gesture to collective humanity. The work speaks not of one body, but of the shared human condition — touch, presence, vulnerability, and memory.

To the left, the vertical ochre rectangle reads as threshold, pillar, or passage. Its warm, earthen tone contrasts with the cool blue hand, suggesting a complementary nature. The form is the "I," which complements the hand as a literal expression of the "I." Below, a small white hito rendered in a few fluid strokes appears in motion, striding forward or reaching outward.

The dark ground unifies these elements in a space that feels contemplative rather than oppressive. Its depth absorbs light and sound, allowing the gestures to resonate like symbols suspended in quiet reflection. The composition resembles a shrine-like arrangement, where mark, movement, and threshold coexist in a field of awareness.

The symbols framed together hearken to the "I heart X" motif, which makes the intended meaning recognizable; however, Parkum injects new symbolism to engage the viewer with the unique meaning that comes from the inclusion of the hito. Together it reads as I am human experiencing all it means to be human.
