A striking original work on handmade paper by Claudia Adel Swager, titled Crypts at Khartoum and dated 1984. The composition layers bands of dusty blue, cream, and warm sandy peach — deckle-edged handmade paper mounted on a terracotta backing — with ghosted arch forms rising from the lower half in a quiet, architectural rhythm. The title and artist's signature are inscribed in pencil on the backing mat, along with the notation "HMP/1984" indicating handmade paper medium.
Presented in a slim brass frame. Unglazed. Approximate framed dimensions 40" wide x 32" tall.
About the Artist
Claudia Adel Swager was a prominent figure in the Northern California studio art scene, known for large-scale handmade paper works and murals exploring themes of history, architecture, and nature. In 1993 she received the American Artist Achievement Award for her 17-foot mural Grandvine I & II, and in 1994 was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant. Her work is represented in museum collections including the Brooks Museum of Art. Crypts at Khartoum dates from 1984, early in her career and prior to her major awards — making this a rare example of her formative studio work.
