It showcases a classic composition from the late Qing Dynasty through the Republic period (late 19th to mid-20th century).
It is carved from solid soapstone (steatite), a soft, easily workable stone prized for its natural, variegated earth tones of tan, brown, and cream mottled grain. The upper right quadrant uses an advanced reticulated piercing technique to create a deep, three-dimensional fretwork structure. The entire scene rests on a carved, integrated pedestal that mimics traditional Chinese tiered wooden display stands.
A traditional baluster vase rests on a small standalone table on the left side. In Chinese culture, a vase is a homophone for peace and safety.The Chrysanthemum: Erupting out of the vase is a heavily stylized chrysanthemum blossom surrounded by jagged, layered leaves. This flower symbolizes longevity, resilience, and autumn.
