In Freedom, Virginia Cohn Parkum distills the idea of liberation into a single, sweeping gesture: the form of a horse emerging from air and dissolving back into it. Executed in sparse, calligraphic strokes, the composition feels less drawn than released — as though the figure has broken free from the page itself.

The horse’s head, rendered in bold, dark ink, anchors the composition. Its profile is decisive and grounded: the strong forehead, the curve of the muzzle, the downward arc of the neck. This concentration of pigment suggests presence and weight — the undeniable reality of the animal. Yet immediately beyond this darkened contour, the body becomes vaporous. Limbs and torso are indicated by faint, brushed traces that barely graze the surface. The mane lifts into wind-like strokes that seem to evaporate midair.
