Virginia Cohn Parkum, c. Unknown
In ENSO, Virginia Cohn Parkum engages one of the most recognizable symbols in Zen visual language — the enso circle — and quietly destabilizes it. Traditionally, the enso is rendered in a single, continuous brushstroke, an embodiment of clarity, completeness, and the unity of emptiness and form. Parkum instead presents a dense, revolving vortex of layered strokes, a circle that feels worked, reworked, and inhabited.
Rather than the swift gesture of enlightenment, this enso appears accumulated. Rings of smoky black and umber swirl inward, as if drawn by gravity toward a muted central aperture. The center does not read as pure emptiness; instead it suggests depth, a passage, or an opening partially obscured. The faint crescent of warm tone within the core introduces an ambiguity between light and shadow, presence and absence, while refusing the clarity typically associated with the motif.
This subversion transforms the enso from a declaration into a process. Instead of a moment of awakened completion, Parkum’s circle suggests searching, circling, and return. The layered surface implies time, hesitation, and the lived experience between insight and uncertainty. Enlightenment here is not instantaneous; it is sedimentary.
The surrounding field of darkened ground further intensifies the experience of inward motion. The circle becomes less a symbol and more a gravitational field — an invitation to contemplate interior space, the unseen, and the unknown.
By disrupting the purity of the traditional enso, Parkum shifts its meaning from perfection to inquiry. ENSO becomes not a statement of wholeness, but an acknowledgement of the ongoing work of becoming — a meditation on the imperfect, human path toward stillness.
