An Imperial Russian Orthodox icon depicting Saint Theodosius, Archbishop of Chernihiv (sometimes spelled Feodosiy or Theodosius of Uglich). It is executed in the Academic style common in late 19th-century and early 20th-century Russian iconography, Measuring: 7 by 5 1/4 inches.
The Inscription: The stylized Church Slavonic script along the upper border reads С. ХIТ. ӨЕОДОСIЙ ЧЕРН., an abbreviation translating to "Holy Hierarch Theodosius of Chernihiv".
He is depicted as a high-ranking bishop (Hierarch), wearing a formal jeweled liturgical miter (crown) and an omophorion (the wide white shoulder vestment adorned with large green crosses). His right hand is raised in a traditional Eastern Orthodox gesture of blessing, forming the monogram of Jesus Christ (IC XC). In his left hand, he holds a ceremonial bishop’s staff or crosier wrapped with a liturgical cloth (sulgub). Suspended at his right hip is a diamond-shaped vestment piece called the epigonation (or palitsa), representing the sword of the Spirit.
Saint Theodosius lived during the 17th century (c. 1630–1696) and served as a highly respected archbishop in Chernihiv. He was officially canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1896 after his relics were uncovered. Because icons of him were not produced prior to his official glorification, this icon can be securely dated between 1896 and 1917 (the fall of the Russian Empire). The realistic rendering of the face and beard departs from traditional, flat Byzantine styles, reflecting the Western-influenced painting style favored by urban workshops in late Imperial Russia.
The piece is hand-painted in egg tempera or oil over a gesso-prepared (levkas) wooden panel. The surface reveals authentic age-related wear, including minor paint loss on the halo, flaking edges, and an oxidized golden varnish coat that gives the background its characteristic dark bronze patina
