about the collection (l'estampe moderne)
l'estampe moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by parisian imprimerie champenois. Many accomplished european art nouveau painters contributed works to this publication, which contained only original prints invented and produced especially for this collection. The publication was edited by charles masson and h. Piazza. Each issue came in a paper cover bearing an original lithograph by alphonse mucha.
each lithograph was accompanied by a tissue containing the details (title of the artwork, name of the artist, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who inspired the artist.

the artist
jacques wély (1873–1910) was a quintessential parisian artist of the belle époque, celebrated for his ability to capture the vivacity and fleeting elegance of french life at the turn of the century. Although he worked as a painter, he gained his greatest fame as a prolific illustrator for popular satirical journals such as le rire and l'assiette au beurre.
wély’s style is defined by a fluid, spontaneous line and a light, often humorous touch. He excelled at depicting the "parisienne"—the modern, fashionable woman—in scenes of daily flirtation, domesticity, or social outings. His technique often blended the charcoal’s soft textures with vibrant splashes of gouache or watercolor, creating a sense of movement and "chic" artifice. While his work often leaned toward the commercial and the anecdotal, it was underpinned by a genuine mastery of character and gesture. Wély’s art remains a charming, visual diary of a world characterized by breezy optimism and effortless style.

from the text on the tissue paper:

english translation:
she was a young woman of about twenty, wearing the costume of the village of toulven, in lower brittany.
her beautiful black eyes looked out clear and frank. Without being absolutely pretty, she was nearly charming with her embroidered wool bodice, her white headdress with large wings, and her collar reminiscent of the medici ruffs\.
the setting was wild. Those wooded hills, those rugs of lichen—it resembled landscapes of times past, while bearing the mask of no specific era. But anne's costume was from the heart of the middle ages, and so one had the impression of that very period\.
