about the collection (l'estampe moderne)
l'estampe moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by parisian imprimerie champenois. Many accomplished european art nouveau painters contributed works to this publication, which contained only original prints invented and produced especially for this collection. The publication was edited by charles masson and h. Piazza. Each issue came in a paper cover bearing an original lithograph by alphonse mucha.
each lithograph was accompanied by a tissue containing the details (title of the artwork, name of the artist, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who inspired the artist.

the artist
henri detouche was a quintessential artist of the belle époque, renowned for his mastery as a painter, lithographer, and writer. Born in paris, he became a fixture of the montmartre art scene, where his work captured the vibrant, often nocturnal energy of the fin de siècle. He was a frequent contributor to influential journals like le courrier français, gaining fame for his graphic precision and satirical wit.
detouche’s style sat at the crossroads of symbolism and the art nouveau movement. His work often explored the "eternal feminine," alternating between depictions of elegant, fashionable socialites and more mysterious, allegorical figures. His series dans les ronces (among the brambles) exemplifies his ability to blend decorative floral motifs with a sense of underlying melancholy or struggle. A brilliant colorist and a technical virtuoso in printmaking, detouche remains a significant figure who translated the sophisticated anxieties and charms of his era into enduring visual poetry.
___
from the text on the tissue paper:
h. Detouche
english translation:
\. Imprudent, she wished to entrust the weariness of her body to the coolness of the stream.
but, surprised by prying eyes, she attempts to steal away, when the sharp claws of the brambles come, with treachery, to halt her in her flight.
for nature is in a state of constant ambush: the cajoling murmur of brooks, the aroma of a thousand censers that flowers half-open beneath one's feet, the deceptive security of thick copses, the inviting trap of the fragrant bed of mosses—everything, from the forest to the mountain, seems to follow a mysterious watchword.
