about the collection (l'estampe moderne)
l'estampe moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by parisian imprimerie champenois. Many accomplished european art nouveau painters contributed works to this publication, which contained only original prints invented and produced especially for this collection. The publication was edited by charles masson and h. Piazza. Each issue came in a paper cover bearing an original lithograph by alphonse mucha.
each lithograph was accompanied by a tissue containing the details (title of the artwork, name of the artist, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who inspired the artist.

the artist
fernand louis gottlob was a versatile french artist who flourished during the height of the belle époque. A student of great masters like jules cheret, gottlob excelled as a painter, lithographer, and caricaturist, becoming a prominent figure in the vibrant montmartre art scene. He is perhaps best remembered for his contributions to the "golden age of the poster," where his bold compositions and elegant typography captured the spirit of parisian nightlife and commercial culture.
his work often showcased the "parisienne"—the modern, fashionable woman of the turn of the century—portrayed with a blend of sophistication and lively charm. Beyond his commercial success, gottlob was a dedicated member of the salon des humoristes, where his keen eye for social observation and satirical wit shone through his illustrations. Whether through a vibrant theater poster or a delicate lithograph, gottlob’s art was characterized by a rhythmic sense of line and a masterful use of color, embodying the rhythmic, decorative energy of art nouveau while maintaining a grounded, human connection to his subjects.

from the text on the tissue paper:

english translation:
\. A tranquility weighed upon the silent countryside. One heard only the croaking of frogs in the nearby pond, and, at moments, this raucous cry would slow, dying away into the somnolence of the air\.
he drew her into this great, cool peace of the night. He took her hand and, their shoulders touching, they moved forward under the shadow of the foliage. She no longer possessed either consciousness or thought. With drowned eyes, she walked through the whiteness of the moon, as blurred as the atmosphere of dreams, looking without seeing at the silhouettes of the trees merged into a mist; and the shiver of the amorous earth penetrated to the depths of her veins.
