about the collection (l'estampe moderne)
l'estampe moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by parisian imprimerie champenois. Many accomplished european art nouveau painters contributed works to this publication, which contained only original prints invented and produced especially for this collection. The publication was edited by charles masson and h. Piazza. Each issue came in a paper cover bearing an original lithograph by alphonse mucha.
each lithograph was accompanied by a tissue containing the details (title of the artwork, name of the artist, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who inspired the artist.

the artist
gustave-max stevens was a belgian painter and illustrator who became a distinguished figure in the symbolist and art nouveau movements. A student of jean-françois portaels, stevens developed an aesthetic that balanced academic precision with the dreamy, atmospheric qualities of the fin de siècle. He was a founding member of the sillon circle, a group of young artists who sought to move away from the rigidness of traditional realism toward a more subjective, emotional experience of art.
his work often centered on the feminine ideal, depicting women in states of quiet contemplation or within lush, decorative floral settings. Stevens was a master of light, using it to create a sense of ethereal stillness that felt both modern and timeless. Beyond his paintings, he was a talented lithographer, contributing to the graphic arts during a period when the poster was becoming a high art form. His legacy is one of elegance, sensitivity, and decorative harmony.

from the text on the tissue paper:
Ibsen.
english translation:
the winter may flee, and the sweetness of spring as well, and the fruits of summer and the leaves of autumn; all may pass\. But you will return to me, oh my sweet betrothed! never to leave me again; i have given you my heart, it waits, resigned, and could never change.
may god, in his great goodness, still protect you in that far-off land that holds you in exile\. I, until the final day, will wait for you here, dear and sweet betrothed; i have given you my heart, it remains faithful to you and could never change.
"solveig's song," after h. Ibsen.
