about the collection (l'estampe moderne)
l'estampe moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by parisian imprimerie champenois. Many accomplished european art nouveau painters contributed works to this publication, which contained only original prints invented and produced especially for this collection. The publication was edited by charles masson and h. Piazza. Each issue came in a paper cover bearing an original lithograph by alphonse mucha.
each lithograph was accompanied by a tissue containing the details (title of the artwork, name of the artist, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who inspired the artist.

the artist
jeanne jacquemin was a singular and enigmatic figure within the french symbolist movement, often referred to as the "saint of the movement" by her contemporaries. Born marie-jeanne boyer in paris, she emerged in the 1890s as one of the few women artists to gain significant respect in the male-dominated salons of the rose+croix. Her work is characterized by a profound, almost haunting mysticism, frequently utilizing pastels to create soft, ethereal textures that blur the line between the physical and spiritual realms.
jacquemin’s art was deeply introspective, often featuring melancholic, idealized female faces—many of which were stylized self-portraits—set against desolate landscapes or crown-of-thorns motifs. These figures were not merely subjects but personifications of internal suffering, religious ecstasy, and the "suffering soul." her style combined the delicate precision of the pre-raphaelites with a somber, uniquely french occultist sensibility. Despite her relative obscurity today, jacquemin was a vital link in the symbolist chain, praised for her ability to translate the "music of the soul" into silent, luminous, and often unsettling visual poetry.

from the text on the tissue paper:
c'est bien là le jeune et vaillant chevalier de cappadoce, dour comme une vierge, fort comme un lion, — que la légende dorée nous montre combattant et tuant le dragon qui s'apprêtait à dévorer la fille du roi de lybie, et dont le caractère héroïque a su inspirer les traditions des différents peuples qui, depuis les croisades, l'ont consacré comme le patron des armées.
english translation:
this is indeed the young and valiant knight of cappadocia, gentle as a virgin, strong as a lion—whom the golden legend shows us fighting and killing the dragon as it prepared to devour the daughter of the king of libya, and whose heroic character has inspired the traditions of various peoples who, since the crusades, have consecrated him as the patron saint of armies.
