about the collection (l'estampe moderne)
l'estampe moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by parisian imprimerie champenois. Many accomplished european art nouveau painters contributed works to this publication, which contained only original prints invented and produced especially for this collection. The publication was edited by charles masson and h. Piazza. Each issue came in a paper cover bearing an original lithograph by alphonse mucha.
each lithograph was accompanied by a tissue containing the details (title of the artwork, name of the artist, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who inspired the artist.

the artist
henri-jacques-edouard evenepoel (1872–1899) was a brilliant light of the belgian post-impressionist movement whose career was tragically cut short by typhoid fever at the age of twenty-seven. Despite his brief life, he left behind a remarkably mature body of work that bridged the gap between the somber tones of his belgian roots and the vibrant, modern energy of paris. Studying under gustave moreau, evenepoel developed a style characterized by bold silhouettes, a sophisticated use of large color planes, and an intimate, observant eye.
his work often captures the quiet, candid moments of everyday life—children at play, bustling parisian boulevards, or quiet domestic scenes. He possessed a unique ability to infuse his subjects with a sense of psychological depth and modern melancholy without sacrificing decorative beauty. His mastery of composition and his sensitive approach to light and shadow suggest that, had he lived, he would have evolved into one of the leading figures of early 20th-century modernism.

from the text on the tissue paper:
english translation:
it is in a parisian square, amidst droll babies guided by mothers in bright attire, that the artist found the vision he has captured for us in this print of original execution and bold, joyful colorations.
enamored by feminine delicacy and the charm of childhood, evenepoel knows how to render, through synthesis, all the prettiness of his preferred models; he preserves their delicate character without ever lapsing into mawkishness.
handled with breadth, and through a most curious approach to color and line, this print will bring a highly personal note to the small gallery of varied and original compositions that we offer to our collectors.
