Titled “Afrique,” this plate presents a rare and intimate view into the domestic life and artisanal traditions of the Kabyle people, a Berber community from northeastern Algeria. The composition is arranged as a series of interconnected scenes, offering a visual narrative of daily life within a Kabyle dwelling. Interior views reveal architectural elements, storage vessels, and household arrangements, while figures are shown engaged in essential tasks such as pottery shaping, metalworking, and food preparation. These depictions provide valuable insight into traditional industries and the rhythm of domestic life. Particularly notable is the inclusion of tattoo motifs, carefully illustrated on arms and hands, reflecting the cultural significance of body marking within Kabyle identity. These geometric and symbolic designs are presented alongside the working scenes, emphasizing their role within both personal and communal expression. Racinet’s approach combines ethnographic precision with a refined artistic sensibility. The figures are rendered with calm dignity, their garments simple yet characteristic, while the muted yet warm color palette enhances the sense of authenticity and atmosphere. The balanced layout transforms documentary observation into a harmonious decorative composition. Printed in Paris by Firmin Didot et Cie, this chromolithograph demonstrates the high technical quality of late 19th-century color printing, with subtle tonal transitions and finely controlled detail. This piece is particularly appealing for collectors interested in ethnographic material, North African culture, or decorative prints with narrative depth. It also works beautifully as a standalone statement piece in both classic and contemporary interiors. Condition: Good condition overall. Light age toning and some spotting, mainly in the margins. Visible central fold as issued, with minor wear along the fold. Edges show light handling wear consistent with age. Image remains clean with soft, well-preserved colors. Framing tips: Ideal for a museum-style presentation with a wide ivory mat and a dark wood or subtle gilt frame. Given the horizontal composition, it works especially well above a console or desk, allowing the narrative scenes to be appreciated in full. Special note: This is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
