An exceptional and unique work by Reynold Henri Arnould (Le Havre, 1919–1980), titled “Moai, Easter Island,” created in ink on paper in the mid-20th century. Bold and gestural ink lines on paper, characteristic of Arnould's style from the 1950s to the 1970s. This piece belongs to the “Visage” series.
It depicts, with powerful aesthetic force, a Moai, a humanoid monolithic statue typical of the Polynesian island of Easter Island. They are believed to represent the island's divine ancestors, whose spirits protect the community and ensure its well-being. For centuries, the Moai were erected on ceremonial platforms known as ahu, which are scattered throughout the island.
Reynold Henri Arnould was a renowned French artist. A student at the age of 10 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1937, winning the Prix de Rome in 1939. After a stay in the United States, he returned to the French capital in 1952 and was appointed director of the Musée de Le Havre and, later, of the Grand Palais in Paris, after having overseen the renovation of its galleries in 1964 at the initiative of the then Minister of Education, André Malraux. His style is rooted in Futurism, heavily influenced by the works of Robert Delaunay.
