John A. Okulick (Born 1947) is active/lives in California. John Okulick is known for Geometric shaped wood sculpture, constructions. He continues to work in a space between painting and sculpture.
John Okuliuk was raised on Governors Island, New York City to first generation Italian and Russian parents. His father being in the military, John traveled around much of the country as a child, living for only a year or two in one place. At the age of 10, he moved from the east coast to Southern California near Disneyland where he went to school. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara, BFA, and UC Irvine, MFA. During his graduate work, he had his first solo show in New York at the Nancy Hoffman Gallery and the Jack Glenn Gallery in Corona del Mar, CA. This started his career as a professional artist. Carpentry captivated him at the time. From there he moved to San Pedro, CA, the port of Los Angeles, having found two old storefronts to live and work in for little rent.
He moved to Los Angeles in the mid 1970’s He was part of the California arts & crafts postmodernist artists that included Viola Frey, William Brice, Billy Al Bengston, Tom Holland, Peter Alexander, Ed Moses, Bell, George Herms, Edward Kienholz, Laddie John Dill, Peter Shire, and John Altoon.
Okulick is fascinated by the illusion of space between reality and fantasy. He works in both natural and traditional materials such as wood, gold leaf, and paint as well as cast bronze sculpture and other metals. Okulick's materials have revolved around wood: natural sanded pine, redwood with bark, wooden sticks, wood that is painted in color, wood that is gold-leafed. Okulick’s public artworks give the viewer a sense of depth that is based on the artist’s construction or perspective. Okulick's work has been commissioned for the Ronald Reagan State Building, Los Angeles; a Metrolink Station, Los Angeles; McCormick Convention Complex Collection, Chicago; and the City of Reno Regional Transportation Office and Conference Center. The artist's work is represented in many major public collections among them Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; and Il Museo delle Ceramiche Grazia, Deruta, Italy. The artist lives and works in southern California.
He has shown his work at Richard Gray Gallery, Patricia Faure Gallery(Asher/Faure) They represented leading artists and sculptors Richard Artschwager, Craig Kauffman, Gwynn Murrill, John Okulick and Joel Shapiro, and painters Llyn Foulkes and Sam Francis, Nancy Hoffman Gallery as well as numerous other prestigious galleries.
