This is a beautiful Original Mid Century Abstract Mixed Media on Paper painting attributed to well-listed American artist, Adams Wirt Garrett (1908-2000) who was known for his expressive depictions of Americana, fairs, and lively public gatherings. Likely created in the mid-20th century, the composition captures the energy of a bustling midway with banners, crowds, carnival architecture, and a sweeping roller coaster rising in the background.
Executed with loose, energetic linework and soft washes of blue, ochre, and sepia tones, the work has an intentionally sketch-like quality that gives it movement and spontaneity. The layered drawing and painterly surface suggest it may have been created as a preparatory study or conceptual work related to Garrett’s larger carnival-themed paintings.
A vintage newspaper clipping attached to the reverse illustrates a stylistically similar carnival scene attributed to Garrett, supporting the attribution. The work is unsigned, but Garrett's name is on the back by an unknown hand.
An appealing and unusual mid-century Americana piece with strong decorative presence, ideal for collectors of vintage art, carnival imagery, folk Americana, or modernist works on paper.
Condition: Painting is in good condition but it is glued into the mat. Mat is not archival and has wear at edges. I would recommend professional rematting and framing.
Measurements: Painting sight size is approx 10"x17.5" and approx 16"x23.5" matted.
