Dinanderie is a technique that dates back to the Middle Ages, which consists in shaping and forging metal sheets by hand, often using a hammer to create either smooth or faceted surfaces in the fabrication of vases, trays and other objects.
Dinanderie pieces, mostly made in bronze, brass and copper, are frequently decorated with repoussé techniques, or by creating an artificial patina with heat or chemicals.

The technique was revived in the 1920s, and Jean Dunand became one of its most famous representatives. In this superb example, Dunand created a rectangular tray in hammered brass, with a mottled surface following a geometric pattern. The ends are rolled into handles, following the same design.
