Antique Grand Tour framed plaster intaglio featuring George Washington. What a rare find! The intaglio itself has some cracks/chips but feels secure. Please examine the photos. It has a paper collar/bezel, mounted securely on a piece of red velvet fabric in a little wooden frame that has a ring to hang it on top. I believe all of which is original. Please note that the veneer on the bottom right corner of the frame has been repaired- see final picture.
These Grand Tour intaglio souvenirs were originally produced and collected from 1800-1840 by wealthy tourists, traveling the world. Surely, they were a bit of a status symbol in the home! This one has “July ‘19” written in pencil on the back of the frame, placing it right in the hay-day of these souvenirs.
The frame measures 4.5” x 5.5”. The plaster intaglio is 2” x 3 3/8”.
