A rare and visually commanding pair of large-scale french biscuit porcelain figures by letu & mauger, paris, produced in the 1860s. Their exceptional size and weight place them firmly within the category of ambitious decorative salon sculpture intended for affluent interiors.
depicting a gallant and his companion in stylised 18th-century costume, the pair reflects rococo revival romanticism through aristocratic courtship imagery and decorative historicism. Their strong theatrical presence and elegant paired narrative give them notable sculptural and interior design value.
letu & mauger was recognised for biscuit and parian-type porcelain, romantic genre figures and decorative works occupying a respected place in the french decorative porcelain market. The impressed l & m marks and moulded companion model numbers confirm authentic manufacture.
executed in finely painted polychrome porcelain with restrained gilding, matt biscuit-like surfaces and distinctive black plinths with gilt ornament, these figures represent the stronger decorative side of the factory’s production.

condition:
the male figure has a small chip under the coat near the pocket area, several minor firing cracks consistent with manufacture and age, and two feet on the base have been reattached. The female figure has several small firing cracks and has lost what was likely a small feather or similar ornament from the hat, which does not significantly affect display. Both figures remain in excellent antique condition overall. Due to their substantial size and weight, they will be shipped in two separate boxes for safe delivery, which will affect shipping cost.
