“gf no. 12”, dated 1984, is one of the key pieces in the oeuvre of the spanish artist lucio muñoz (1929–1998). Etching and aquatint on special handmade paper (segundo santos paper). Muñoz didn't just paint; he "constructed" his works. The piece features an area with a very pronounced rough texture, as the artist often sought to give the support an almost sculptural relief. He uses a sober palette of deep blacks and earthy whites, a hallmark of his abstract style, which aimed to evoke sensations of natural or geological landscapes without directly representing them. The composition is divided by aggressive geometric shapes and diagonal lines that create a sense of movement or fracture.
lucio muñoz is the most outstanding spanish informalism painter who was not part of the el paso group; however, his work is always included in anthologies and exhibitions alongside that of the artists who were members of this group, both due to their shared artistic affinity and chronology. Informalism emerged in europe after world war ii and is characterized by the inclusion of diverse materials in the artworks. Using chance and improvisation, he creates textured works with an ideological foundation linked to existentialism and individual subjectivity. It differs from american abstract expressionism in that it is more poetic, more static, and more understated. This painting is eminently mental; nothing arises randomly or by chance. The compositions are premeditated, every stroke carefully considered. He plays with color, geometry, straight lines, and patches of color. The result is a vibrant, surreal, and lyrical painting.
he is considered one of the pioneers of abstraction in the country. He began his career working with landscapes, a genre widely practiced in spain at that time, especially among those who considered themselves disciples of benjamín palencia. In 1955, muñoz's first paintings approaching abstraction were exhibited, influenced by paul klee, rufino tamayo, ben nicholson, and joaquín torres garcía, among others. In paris, he declared his clear commitment to abstract expressionism. Upon returning to spain, two exhibitions solidified his style and were enough to establish him within the spanish avant-garde.
the informalist aesthetic took hold in his work through the fusion of traditional materials with unconventional ones such as earth, paper, and cardboard. The decisive years were 1958 and 1959, when he discovered the expressive possibilities of wood, a material traditionally considered unpictorial. In 1983, he received the national prize for visual arts.
