An excellent and representative work by Rafael Canogar (Toledo, 1935), titled “Head”, signed, dated, and marked as an artist's proof.
Rafael Canogar's “Heads” represent a key stage in his career, which began in the early 1980s and marked a return to schematic figuration after his abstract period. These works explore the human form through primitive masks and totemic structures, evoking the influences of Picasso and Julio González. They are always schematic, almost sculptural representations in painting, evoking primitive masks with a great formal synthesis.
Painter, sculptor, and engraver, Rafael Canogar is considered one of the leading representatives of abstract and contemporary art in Spain, recognized with the National Prize for Plastic Arts in 1982. He was a student of Ascensio Martiarena (1889-1966) in San Sebastián, where he spent his childhood, and later of the painter Daniel Vázquez Díaz (1882-1969), after settling in Madrid in 1948. In 1957, he participated in the creation of the El Paso group, of which he was a member until its dissolution in 1960.
His work cannot be classified within a specific style. However, three elements remain constant throughout his work: material, color, and gesture, with which he creates his own artistic language. Abstraction and figuration coexist and alternate throughout his creative years. In 1983, he reintroduced figurative elements into his works, beginning the Heads series.
