Preston (b. 1945, Stockholm) is a Los Angeles-based painter whose work is held in the permanent collections of LACMA, the Hammer Museum, the Laguna Art Museum, and the Portland Museum of Art, among others. Her paintings — rooted in decades of close observation of the natural world — occupy a space between landscape and abstraction, drawing on both Western and East Asian pictorial traditions.
Through Branches is a strong example of her signature approach: an immersive tangle of branches and leaves set against a radiant golden-ochre ground, the composition filling the canvas edge to edge with no horizon, no sky, no earth — just the living canopy itself. The painting rewards sustained looking; the longer you sit with it, the more it gives back.
