Joe Andoe, Horse I, 1994. Stone lithograph, signed and numbered "Joe Andoe 17/50" in the plate, lower right. Housed in a professional black wood frame with a wide white linen mat.
Andoe (b. 1955) works through a signature reductive process: he covers his surface with a single layer of paint, then incises the outline of his subject and wipes away the still-wet paint within it — revealing the textured surface beneath. The result is a figure that appears to emerge from the background rather than sit on top of it, equal parts photographic and dreamlike. His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the San Diego Museum of Art.
Horse I is a large-scale portrait of a standing white horse in profile, rendered in Andoe's signature high-contrast style. The image has a quiet, almost monumental presence — equal parts documentary and dreamlike.
Image size: 46.5 × 40 inches (inside mat). Framed: 61 × 54 inches.
Please note: shipping will be arranged starting July 17, 2026. Purchases made before that date will be fulfilled shortly after. Thank you for your patience.

The lithograph itself is stable, with no tears, creases, or handling marks. Signature and edition number (17/50) appear within the printed image, lower right, and are clearly legible. There is one small blue mark on the horse's body that appears to be on the print itself; origin unknown, possibly ink transfer from contact at some point. The glass shows two faint surface scuffs visible from certain angles, not visible when viewed head-on. The professional black wood frame shows some dings and scrapes along the bottom corners, consistent with the piece having rested on the floor at times. The white linen mat shows faint toning in places. Buyer may wish to consider replacement glass and/or new matting; the lithograph itself has real presence and is well worth the investment.
