French cave à liqueur of the Napoleon III period, c. 1860–1880 — a Second Empire dining-room essential, the locked decorative … Read more French cave à liqueur of the Napoleon III period, c. 1860–1880 — a Second Empire dining-room essential, the locked decorative case used to serve cognac and liqueur after dinner. Gilt brass framework with beveled glass on four sides, hinged top, mirrored base. Second Empire decorative vocabulary throughout: egg-and-dart cornice, foliate cast ornament, four acanthus scroll feet. Interior brass rack holds four spiral-threaded crystal decanters with faceted ball stoppers and gilt collars. Fourteen cordial glasses included; eight original to the set (spiral threading, gilt rims), six are later replacements in a different pattern. 11.5 × 12.5 × 9.5 in. Good condition. See less
