An extraordinary and highly evocative piece of early 17th-century printing, this antique miniature volume titled Respublica Romana (“The Roman Republic”) was printed in Leiden, Netherlands, by the famed Elzevir Press in 1629. Compact in scale yet monumental in historical importance, the book embodies the intellectual spirit of the Renaissance and the enduring fascination with the political and military legacy of Ancient Rome.
The work belongs to the celebrated Republics series published by the distinguished Elzevir family, renowned throughout Europe for producing finely printed scholarly books of exceptional quality in small, portable formats. These volumes were prized by scholars, statesmen, travelers, and collectors during the 17th century for their elegant typography and remarkably detailed engravings.
Respublica Romana explores the structure, governance, customs, and history of the Roman Republic, offering readers of the period a scholarly examination of one of history’s most influential civilizations. Such works reflected the growing humanist interest in classical antiquity and were intended to educate readers on Roman political institutions, civic virtue, military organization, and the rise of imperial power. The text served both as a historical study and as a reflection on governance and statecraft during a time when European intellectuals looked to Rome as a model of political order and republican ideals.
Particularly striking is the engraved architectural title page, rich with allegorical symbolism. The composition features classical figures, military trophies, Roman iconography, and the she-wolf nursing Romulus and Remus — the legendary founders of Rome — all rendered with exceptional detail. The engraving alone is a superb example of early Baroque book illustration and adds tremendous visual appeal to the volume.
Measures approximately 4.25 inches high, 2.5 inches wide, and 1.5 inches deep. Text language is Latin. Good antique condition with tight binding and expected wear from handling. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Despite its diminutive size, the book possesses remarkable presence and charm, with a beautifully aged binding and authentic centuries-old patina that only genuine early printing can achieve. Its compact dimensions made it practical for travel and private study, while today it serves as a captivating decorative and scholarly object equally suited for a collector’s cabinet, library, or Grand Tour-inspired interior.
A fascinating and increasingly scarce survival from the golden age of European printing, ideal for collectors of antiquarian books, classical history, Roman antiquity, and early Elzevir editions.
