This map was engraved by John Rapkin after designs by H. Warren, forming part of one of the most visually distinctive and sought-after atlases of the Victorian period. The map presents a comprehensive view of Asia Minor, including present-day Turkey along with surrounding regions such as Cyprus, Rhodes, and parts of the eastern Mediterranean. It reflects the geopolitical landscape of the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century, with detailed place names, mountain ranges, rivers, and classical references carefully rendered throughout the composition. One of the most striking features of this piece is its bold and elegant Greek key (Meander) border, a design inspired by classical antiquity and strongly associated with ancient Greek art and architecture. This decorative frame elevates the map beyond a purely geographical document, giving it a refined and architectural presence that makes it especially desirable for interior display. John Tallis maps are widely regarded as some of the most decorative productions of the 19th century, combining precise engraving with artistic flourishes that appeal strongly to collectors and interior designers alike. The collaboration between Rapkin and Warren resulted in maps that are both informative and highly aesthetic, bridging the gap between scientific cartography and decorative art. This example, presented in its uncolored or monochrome state, offers a more restrained and architectural aesthetic, emphasizing the fine engraving work and making it particularly suitable for modern and minimalist interiors, while still retaining its historical depth and character. This is an original 19th-century engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and not always on scale in the visual presentation. Condition: Good condition with age-related toning and light surface wear. Central folds as issued. Minor spotting and handling marks consistent with age. Margins intact with a strong and crisp impression. Framing tips: This map works exceptionally well in a dark walnut or ebonized frame with a wide ivory or off-white mat to emphasize the graphic border. For a more contemporary look, a thin black frame with a generous mat creates a striking contrast that highlights the Greek key design.
